Postcard from Munich from :

Nikon D800 (pre)ordered

Before teaching workshops this weekend in Munich and before flying to Yemen on Monday, I met with representatives of my suppliers, partners, and sponsors today. At that occasion, I was also able to (pre-)order the upcoming Nikon D800. Sweet. Can’t wait to hold it in my hands…

UPDATE: apparently, both D4 and D800 are severely delayed because of the heavy quake damage to Nikon’s plant in Sendai, Japan.

UPDATE 2: the D700 replacement is not to be expected until December 2011. (Aug 22 ’11)

UPDATE 3: because I get so many questions – since 2011 seems to have been the precursor of the apocalyptical 2012 a couple of things happened out Nikon’s control (and even more outside my control) that severely delayed this camera. Luckily enough for me, the big project for which I need the capabilities of the new Nikon was delayed, too… Yet, the much lighter body of the D4 should excite pros, too… Finally an alternative to the D700 / 5D league? Did they specify anything about d800 or its release?

    1. Claudius says:

The technical specifics are more are less as to be expected, I guess. +-20mp, full HD video, 100% viewfinder, etc. The really interesting stuff is how the camera will actually perform – High iso noise? Dynamic range? We all have to wait and see…
I was told to expect to get it by late summer. D800 will be the second pro grade body this year I was told and shipment will start about two months after the first one. (What ever that means.)
My interpretation: D4 announcement in June, shipment in August. D800 announcement in August, shipment in September.

      1. David Kline says:

I was wondering, do you have any idea or speculation about how well the 800 will perform as far as handling noise in long exposure? I currently have the D700, which I absolutely love; however, I notice quite a bit of noise (including red and blue hot pixels) when I do long exposures (e.g. more than 20 minutes). I am reluctant to change camera bodies to a newer camera, as I am attached to and love my 700, but I would be very interested in a full frame camera that had 100 percent viewfinder coverage if it offered much better noise performance for long exposures. I was disappointed to see the amount of noise after only 20 minutes at low ISO (100). The only other thing that the 700 disappoints me on is the 95 percent viewfinder coverage; I get the unintended tree branch or whatever in the picture all too often.

        > D4 announcement in June, shipment in August. D800 announcement in August, shipment in September.

This makes sense for Nikon. The D3 came out before the D700 as well.

Anybody who thinks he urgently needs a next generation Nikon Pro model will probably get the big one instead of waiting for the medium-range type to come.

      FAKE FAKE FAKE

Just because a German retailer takes your order, doesn’t mean Nikon is taking orders.

  2. Douglas Mason says:

    and you’re the only one?

    1. Claudius says:

They put me on a list – and no: I am not the first one on that list.

  3. nice to know… any hint about the price? :)

    Hi Claudius,
Who told you you could pre order the D800, a Nikon rep or the retailer ?

    1. Claudius says:

      a Nikon rep…

    Dear Mr. Schulze.
I sincerely hop this is not some kind of cruel joke, as I am desperately looking for a DX to FX upgrade. I am sure D700 is a wonderful camera, but I am using video more and more on my D90 and would really miss that on a D700. D3s / D4 are way out of my budget.
Please keep us up-to-date on this; I will closely follow your blog from now on!

    1. glenn says:

Exactly what I am thinking, keep searching for relevant info on that ‘d800′ but nothing concrete turns up……..
I’d love a 20+mp sensor with great iso results and full hd video function, flash for NCLS ,full viewfinder. . . I know its a lot but its certainly duable these these.

      and around 2200-2500€ ‘s

  12. Doubtful says:

So you say you pre-ordered a unseen Nikon D800 with no paperwork to back it or proof of confirmation. Sure anyone can say they’re on a list, but you purposly portrayed that you pre-ordered in order to drive up your blog hits and put yourself in the limelight and said “look at meeeeeeeee!”.

    I call “shenannigans”…..

  13. Claudius says:

There are very little information I can share but that the D800 will hit stores in Sept, will include FullHD video and will have a drastically raised megapixel-count… I hope that helps?

  14. dude says:

I heard someone asked nikon rep in australia, but they said they usually don’t get any news until a week before it got announce by nikon. i wonder how nikon rep in german treated differently.

  15. Claudius,

I for one will take you at your word. Can tell you I finally switched to digital for my commercial work purchasing the D700… absolutely a fabulous piece of equipment. I continue to shoot fine art with my Mamiya RB67 and scan images on my Imacon scanner. Really can’t wait to get my hands on a few more megapixels so enlargements will rival my RB. D3x at $8000 is a little over priced… but do like the fact it does not have video. Video is just not any use for my commercial or fine art.

    Hi Claudius,
I was wondering if any of your Nikon contacts mentioned the 24th of August date as a possible announcement for the D800 ?
I would be grateful for any information as many at nikonrumors.com are waiting for any news about the new Nikon bodies.
    Thanks for your time.

“… the D800 will hit stores in Sept….”
Well, here we are, it’s the middle of September. Anything new to share about when this D800 thing is supposed to happen? Like Morten, I am a D90 user, love the camera but I am looking to upgrade to FX. I have considered the D700 many times this year, but always the “eminent” announcement of the D800 causes me to put off any new camera purchases just a bit longer.

  19. Mcucuzza says:

    Claudius,

How are you enjoying your D800 sample? Is the ISO performance as good as expected?

    Matthew

    1. Claudius says:

You don’t expect an answer, do you? ;-)

  20. Claudius says:

as said before – the camera is unfortunately delayed. But stay tuned, expect an announcement over the next month or two…

  21. Patricia says:

    It’s november! :(

    1. Bob says:

      it’s december……….

did you ask the nikon rep on what kind of list you are???
are you deleted from the list???
